LANS SOCIETY

The Liberal Arts and Natural Sciences society (LANS society) is a departmental society that is closely involved in each students’ personal experience within the LANS course. The society works hard to provide a social element and extra support to the course - organising events where each of our members can get to know one another whilst having fun and feeling like they have an extra place to ask questions and be supported.

We organised a canal boat party at the Autumn term 2017 for first years to get to know their course mates in a more casual environment, something essential as LANS students only get one lecture a week together as a year group so get less time to make close friendships. This Christmas we are organising a get together at Digbeth Dining Club where we have hired out some of Mama Roux’s for us to all enjoy great food and drink as a whole cohort together.

The society also runs a parenting system between all years where students provide support to each other and integrate the course themselves. It also creates a more social and friendly environment instead of a course where nobody recognises each other and are unable to approach those in other years. The society also provides opportunities to integrate the years through sport. The LANS society intramural netball allows different years to get to know each other in a team environment, creating strong bonds between the team members both off and on the court.

With Welfare being an essential part of the support provided by the department, we have allocated ‘super-parents’ - students who have particular experience with certain aspects of university life. Currently we have a ‘Sober socials’, LGBTQ+, International, ‘Birmingham experience’ and Welfare Representative. Having students there to provide guidance on where to go or what to do if you are struggling with areas such as mental health, the drinking culture at university, or even if you just want to integrate yourself into the university and city in more ways, allows students to have a more informal and approachable experience with welfare.
